Gouldian Finch
Although it is one of the most common pet birds in Australia, the Gouldian Finch is in fact becoming an endangered species in the wild. It is native to northern Australia but bushfires and increased cattle grazing over the years has contributed to a significant reduction in it natural seed sources and the finch's numbers have consequently diminished.
Known for its soft, beautiful chirp, the Gouldian Finch is a brightly coloured little bird swathed in glorious colours ranging from bright yellow, lilac and a variety of greens through to deep blues and rich blacks.
Maintenance:
For all its beauty, the Gouldian Finch is a poor nest maker and requires considerable help to create a comfortable home when kept as a pet. They generally prefer an enclosed aviary, away from cold and drafts, and are happiest when they have a secluded space to retreat to such as a nest box. They are very social birds which prefer to be paired up with their own kind and in a cage that is roomy enough to allow plenty of freedom for two birds. The Gouldian Finch is notable for its high metabolism and appears to be hungry almost all the time. A good mix of seeds (including millet and niger) will keep these birds in good condition, while the occasional treat of green vegetables in their diet will help promote optimum growth as well as please the taste buds!
